A castle and a bottle of wine

So we just got back from Assisi, were we spend 2 and a half days for orienation. It's a beautiful town, in the "mystic region" of Italy, halfway up a mountain. Remember when I was worried about gaining some weight from all the gelato I plan to consume, and the wine I plan on drinking? After two and half days of Assisi, I'm not going to be worried about it for another three weeks. The town is on a mountain, and the buses couldn't go up the streets so they dropped us off at the bottom and we hiked to our rooms, which were still at the botttom of the city. It's a rather steep mountain and you had to walk awhile to get to the different basilicas, restaurants, and wine bars, so by the time we came back, my legs were in the best shape. We went on a walking tour the first day and saw all the basilicas, like St. Claire's, and St. Francesco's. It was foggy the first day but it made it even more pretty and mysterious. By the time we left the last basilica, and had walked abour 200 feet away you could barley make out the building, and right at that time all the bells started ringing and it was one of the most beautiful things I've witnessed. That night we went to a local wine bar, I don't think this poor small town was ready for 235 of us, it seemed like half of us were there. The next day we did some more walking around and then took an afternoon trip to the medieval village of Gubbio. It was a gorgeous but a very cold day and the town was just as beautiful as Assisi. There was an old ancient roman theatre there that was beautiful and you could climb up on. We returned to Assisi and had dinner, then grabbed a couple of bottle of wines and climbed very high to this beautiful castle that was lit up at night. You could see the entire town below and it was probably one of my favorite times so far in Italy. We're back in Rome now, and classes start tomorrow but I don't have any Wednesday classes, so I'm hoping to go on a run through our neighborhood and get to know it a little better.

The top photo is a photo of Assisi, the next is of Gubbio, the next is the castle at Assisi at night, and the last is St. Francesco's basilica in the fog.
